So You Want to Write an eBook
By K. Pflug
Do you have a special skill? How about an awesome experience? Maybe you have some special knowledge that you want to share with the world... if any of these are true, then you should definitely think about writing an eBook!
People oftentimes think that writing an eBook is something that we cannot accomplish. Well, I'm here to tell you that this couldn't be further from the truth! I understand that it seems intimidating... but I will show you that making an eBook is absolutely possible!
I hope you are ready, because we are about to jump in. Let's discuss a few steps that should be considered in order to begin making our very own product.
Begin by Making a Plan
If we don't follow a plan, then our eBook will come out disorganized. Not only that, but it will take us far longer then it should to complete! Since we want our first eBook to be a great reflection of the awesome things we can do, let's make a plan.
1. The mindmap
The first step in this plan should be to make a mindmap. If you don't know what this is, don't worry (Google it and you will have your answer in less then 10 seconds). It is only one step further then brainstorming. You should first brainstorm and write down all of your thoughts... then, you should start organizing what you came up with in your brainstorming session into categories.
THIS is your mindmap! This will help serve us because it will give us a direction (and this way we don't end up lost and wasting time!)
I created a mindmap for this very article. With it, I could think about all the things I wanted to put in this article, and it helped show me where exactly these different topics belonged. Now, the next thing that has to be done is explaining what each subject in our mindmap means, and why it's important.
2. Create an outline
This step should be far easier then the first... because it stems directly from the mindmap! To create our outline, we have to take all the distinct elements from our mindmap, and begin making sections and subsections to add to our eBook.
After this, we should now organize our outline and create an order. When looked at, this outline should be going from beginning to end in a clear, coherent manner. Lastly, to help us with our outline... envision what the table of contents of our book would look like... well, this is practically the same thing as what our outline should be!
Make Yourself a Template
If your word processor allows you to create a template, then get to it! This is one of the biggest time savers that you can do when making an eBook. It is not easy to have to continually format and re-format each page you write, so please don't forget this ever-important step!
1. Keep it simple when choosing your font
One of the main things that I see people doing wrong is not choosing a simple, easy-to-read font. People want their eBook to look awesome (and I don't blame them), but choosing a fancy font that is hardly readable is one of the worst decisions that can be made!
I suggest sticking to a font such as Arial, or Times New Roman (even though I personally do not like Times New Roman because it reminds me of school reports!)
2. Utilize paragraph styles
Is it hard to follow along as you are reading your eBook because it looks like one huge block of text? Well, this is where you can get a little crazy. Make your headings and subheadings as creative as you would like! THIS is the time that you can let yourself get a little fancy, as it is not used very often.
In addition, the use of headings and subheadings can help refocus the reader! It gives them a short break, so that they can continue to focus on your great content. It is sort of like a very brief intermission.
The last tip I will give is to use paragraph styles! You can setup all the font colors and sizes that you would like, and have access to them in a flash! With paragraph styles, you can assign what the text will look like in all of your headings, subheadings, and the body of your work. An invaluable tool!
Time to Start Writing!
We now come to the step that people fear the most... but cast those fears aside!! Although the first couple of pages can sometimes be tough... once you get the ball rolling, everything will fall into place!
1. Write in sections
Do not forget this awesome tip. If you ever get stuck in a certain section of your eBook- then jump to another section that you think you may have an easier time writing. No one ever said you have to write this thing in the order of your outline!
If you jump from section to section, you will start gaining confidence and then you will be able to build on your success. It is amazing, but when people do this... they often find that the sections they had a hard time with are now no problem to write at all!
2. Have a good feel for your audience
If you don't know who you are writing for... how can you write anything at all? This is something that us authors should keep in mind all the time. Here is a great piece of advice: imagine the EXACT person you are writing for. Create a picture of this person in your mind... what does their hair look like? How tall are they? What type of house do they live in? Where do they work?
... I could go on and on, but I think you get the point. If you have a super clear idea of your audience, then you will be able to share unbelievable content with them. Imagine you wrote your eBook about car maintenance while envisioning that your audience is made up of four year olds?
3. If you are stuck, try making your introduction or preface
For some reason, this part of a book is sometimes neglected. What a shame! This is the part that most readers see first... so this is your first chance to capture their eyeballs and have them drooling to read your book!
I suggest letting the reader's gain some insight into your intention for writing your eBook in the preface. That way, when reading your work, they will be able to better understand where you are coming from.
Not only that, but you can throw them a fascinating story or two! Everyone loves a good story...
Putting it all together
Just follow the process of trying to complete one section at a time, and before you know it, you will have completed your very first eBook!
It won't ever happen if you don't get out there and give it a shot... so what are you waiting for? The world is out there waiting to learn from everything you have to share... so start taking action and get busy writing your first eBook!
Thank you, and enjoy your day!
